Once again, the decision on the establishment of the international UNESCO-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Prize is postponed until next Tuesday. In view of the debate provoked by certain lobbies and international institutions, Equatorial Guinea’s Press and Information Office has disseminated a communiqué denouncing the new media campaign on the creation of this prize that does no harm to anyone, and whose objective is, on the contrary, to contribute to the research on diseases and other problems that ravage especially the African continent. We publish the communiqué in its entirety.

Communiqué on the new international media campaign against the creation of the UNESCO-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Prize

As a result of the judicial actions that were carried out in France, and that coincide with a new media campaign to criticize the approval of the International UNESCO-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Equatorial Guinea’s Press and Information Office wishes to disseminate the following statements:

In the first place, we want to make public our surprise concerning the recent judicial actions carried out in France. This action, illogical within its judicial framework, just two days before the holding of another meeting in Paris to deal once again with the subject of the creation of the UNESCO-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo Prize, seems especially surprising.

For this reason, we consider that these actions are purely a maneuver to try to disapprove once again the creation of the UNESCO-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo prize, a subject that will be dealt with again in the executive meeting today, Friday, September 30.

This Information Office wants to reaffirm that the offer to create this prize will continue despite the petitions made by certain institutions to withdraw the offer. A prize whose objective is TO PROMOTE RESEARCH ON DISEASE AND HEALTH PROBLEMS IN THE AFRICAN CONTINENT. A proposal by which Equatorial Guinea wishes to share part of its wealth with other less fortunate States of the continent. And a proposal that has the backing of many countries in the midst of the UNESCO.

We also recall that the judicial actions carried out in France are a consequence of certain attacks brought on by the NGO Transparency International France, whose Chairman, Daniel Lebêgue, is, at the same time, Director and Chairman of the Auditing Committee of the company TECHNIP; a company that signed a contract with Equatorial Guinea in 2010 for the offshore exploitation of the Aseng field, block 1; this association once more reflects that the true objectives of the creators of these campaigns are their own economic interests in our country, and it also shows the hypocrisy of some institutes that carry out moral double dealing.
