On May 14 was held the meeting of the Special Committee of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, whose main task was to study the election of its members.
At the initiative of the current Chairman of the African Union (AU), the Head of State of Benin, Thomas Boni Yayi, the meeting was held in Cotonou (Benin), on May 14, with the attendance of the Heads of State and Government of South Africa, Algeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Gabon and Chad.
The Communication Office of the AU has indicated that members of the Special Committee met to discuss the modalities to be adopted in the appointment of Commission members. This meeting takes place in preparation for the next regular meeting of Heads of State and Government of the AU, which will be held on July 15 and 16.
The meeting on Monday, May 14 is the continuation of the one held on March 17, in which there was no resolution of the differences between Gabon and South Africa, two countries that are candidates for the post of Chairman of the Commission, whose leaders seek to reach a consensus to avoid a confrontation in the next vote in July.
