Omidiran tips Falconets for Caf awards

Fifa women committee member, Alhaja Ayo Omidiran has thrown in her lot for Nigeria’s Under-20 team, Falconets to win the 2010 Caf national women’s team of the year awards.

Lined up for the coveted national women team of the year awards slated for Monday, December 20 in Cairo, Egypt are six-time African champion, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Equatorial Guinea national team and Nigeria’s Under-20 team, the Falconets.

Omidiran who said Falconets are continent’s role model told SuperSport.com over the telephone on Friday that such an award to the team will challenge other African age grade teams to action.

“Nigeria’s Under-20 team should win it the reason being that they excelled outside the continent and that will serve as incentives to other Under-20 teams in Africa. Super Falcons and Guinean teams are okay, but the Falconets are my candidate for the award.”

Although the former Nigeria Football Association board member was emphatic who should win the national team award, she was indifferent to the player of the year award which has three Nigerians – Perpetua Nkwocha, Stella Mbachu and Ebere Orji jostling for honour.

“I do not care who gets it, they are our girls, I know for sure that a Nigerian will win it, it is pleasurable to me and I know whoever that gets it will be a good ambassador to women football.”

However, the proprietress of the defunct Omidiran Babes has advice for the men folks, who for a while have been conspicuously missing from the shortlists, and that is to show commitment when they play for father land. “Men should learn from the women, women show total commitment and always doing very well for our nation, you need to see them in competition, they play first and ask for entitlement later,” she admonished.
