Marchand sacked by Tunisians

TUNIS — Bertrand Marchand was sacked as coach of the Tunisian national side on Wednesday after a disastrous start to their bid to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, the national federation announced.

The 57-year-old Frenchman had signed a two year contract in June 2010 with the task of guiding the Tunisians to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations finals, being co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

However, two defeats to minnows Botswana and a draw at home to Malawi leaves them struggling to qualify for the continental showpiece which they have won just once, in 2004.

Marchand, who has resigned from his post as coach of Qatari outfit Al-Khor to take the job, had previous experience of coaching in Tunisia having been in charge of Club Africain and then Etoile du Sahel, whom he guided in 2007 to the African Champions League title.
