King wants SD to host AFCON

LUDZIDZINI – His Majesty King Mswati III believes that the country is capable of one day hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Fresh from returning from the continental showpiece which was co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, the King said he had a dream of one day experiencing the country hosting an event of such magnitude.

He said the kingdom could partner with a neighbouring country in hosting the finals, as he personally witnessed what an imperative assignment it was to host such games.

“The finals between Zambia and Ivory Coast were an amazing experience and my dream is for our country to also host such a tournament. The facilities were world class. Once the economy is fully resuscitated, we need to build stadiums that will be able to accommodate massive numbers, and maybe we could partner with another country in hosting the finals,” he said.

The King said both countries had outdone themselves in hosting a wonderful tournament and further congratulated Zambia for lifting the trophy.

“The Zambians have made the whole Southern African region proud by returning home with the cup. If you consider the personal tragedy that they experienced in 1993, when their entire national team was depleted in a plane crash, the manner in which they rose above their circumstances and made their nation proud is exceptional,” he said.

His Majesty also said it was his wish to see Sihlangu playing in the tournament in future.

“What I learned in Gabon is that world class coaches bring results so maybe it is time that the national team acquires the services of a top class international coach who will make our dream a reality.”

He further wished Green Mamba and Royal Leopard all the best as they participate in their CAF (Confederation of African Football) assignments and advised them to play their games with confidence.

“If they don’t undermine themselves, play confidently and play as a team, then both teams are set to do well in the tournament,” said the King.

Green Mamba faces Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum at the Somhlolo National Stadium on Sunday while Royal Leopard is away in Zambia playing against Red Arrows FC also on Sunday.

His Majesty returned to the country yesterday after honouring an invitation to watch the finals between Zambia and Ivory Coast. He was also at the opening ceremony of the event which was hosted by Equatorial Guinea a few weeks ago
