Guinea disburses $7 Million for Afcon
The government of Guinea has allocated the sum of $7 million (R 57 m) for the participation of its team in the 2012 African Cup of Nations debuting on January 21 in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The budget will cover travel costs, match bonuses and other logistical needs, the sports ministry said on Thursday. The Football Federation (Feguifoot) and the ministry of finance have been tasked with overseeing the management of the funds to guarantee transparency.
Several officials of the FA had been accused of mishandling millions of dollars earmarked for the 2008 Afcon held in Ghana. Guinea coach Frenchman Michel Dessuyer on Wednesday named a list of 26 players to take part in next year’s showpiece, including playmaker Pascal Feindouno and veterans Kevin Constant and Ismaël Bangoura.
The Syli National will regroup on January 2 in Conakry before travelling to neighbouring Ivory Coast for a week-long preparation due to begin on January 9 at the Asec Mimosas gigantic facility. Guinea are pitted against Mali, Botswana and Ghana in Group D based in Gabon’s second host city Franceville, and will begin their campaign against the Eagles of Mali on January 24.
