Ghana can win CAN 2012 – Abedi
Legendary Ghana forward Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayew believes the current team have the quality to claim the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The Black Stars have lost their dominance of the continent’s elite competition after failing to win the title in 30 years.
They were the first side to win four Nations Cup titles – a feat they achieved in 1982 when Abedi was still in the team – but they have since been caught up by Cameroon and Egypt, with the latter going on to set a new mark of seven title wins.
However in recent years Ghana have started to find their best form with a host of young talents coming through. They reached the competition’s final in 2010 and the quarter-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
“We have a team of young players that can go there and deliver the goods,” Abedi, who has two sons – Andre and Jordan – in the team said.
“But, we must also bear in mind that, all those countries which will qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations are very good. We must respect them, so that we can go in with some courage and determination to win the trophy.”
Ghana are currently tied on 13 points with Sudan in Group I of the 2012 qualifiers and must win or draw in Khartoum against the Sudanese side to be sure of qualifying for the finals.
