The foreign ministry said in a statement quoted by the APS news agency that it had noted the September 20 announcement by African Union chairman, Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema, that it now recognises the NTC (National Transitional Council) as Libya’s legitimate leadership.
Accordingly, “the Algerian government declares its willingness to work closely with the new Libyan authorities to establish a bilateral cooperation to benefit the two brotherly nations and promote conditions of peace, security and stability in the region,” it said.
The government said its solidarity with its neighbour “is a constant which will continue to express itself fully.”
Algeria had previously angered the NTC by allowing members of fugitive Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi’s family to seek sanctuary across the border.
