Burkina Faso showed no mercy for Ethiopia, which they steamrolled with an indisputable 4-0. The match was exciting, and the Ethiopians could have gotten ahead with a ball that slipped, but that the Burkinabe defense got it away from the goal. However, the quality of Alain Traore and the strength of his companions were too much for the inexperienced Ethiopians. This result leaves Burkina Faso with one foot in the quarter finals. Ethiopia would only be saved by a miracle, in the third and final match of this phase.

The goals were scored by Alain Traore (minutes 34 and 74), Djakaridja Kone (79) and Jonathan Pitroipa (94). Ivory Coast became the first team in the championship to win the first two matches of the group stage, so it is at the head of Group D. The Ivorians played a very serious game in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, and proved to be one of the strongest in the championship against Tunisia’s team, who although  they beat Algeria 1-0 on the first day, they could not against Yaya Toure and and companions. The goals of the Ivorians were scored by Gervinho (minute 21), Yaya Toure (87) and Didier Ya Konan (90), who completed the 3-0 score.

Togo won 2-0 against Algeria on Saturday, a result which mathematically classified Ivory Coast. This will make Togo and Tunisia dispute the other spot of this Group D. Algeria therefore is already eliminated and is already out of the competition. In this group, Ivory Coast has six points, while Togo and Tunisia have three. These two teams will face off on Wednesday on the third day, a draw will be enough to pass the Togolese to quarter finals.

The goals of Togo were the work of Emmanuel Adebayor (minute 32) and finally, in injury time, Dove Wome (minute 93), who had entered the field in the second half, and put the two to zero on the scoreboard.

Zambia and Nigeria, in their match of Group C, tied on Saturday, January 26, at the Mbombela Stadium. And all thanks to Kennedy Mweene, who became the true figure of the champion team that won the last edition. The goalkeeper prevented several goals and also scored a penalty shot that led to the tie for his team. The Nigerians scored in the 57th minute, thanks to Emmanuel Emenike.

In the matches in Group A, Cape Verde beat Angola, qualifying as group leaders, while South Africa and Morocco tied 1-1, allowing South Africa to pass to the next stage as second team classified.
