16th AU Summit opens with focus on Cote d’ Ivoire …Equatorial Guinea President emerges new AU Chairperson

The 16th ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, took off on Sunday, 30/01/2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the political crisis in Cote d’Ivoire dominating discussion.

The country for now remains suspended from the African Union until the crisis is resolved. Various speakers at the opening of the summit which kicked off at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, warned that that Laurent Gbagbo’s continuous hold on power despite loosing the November general elections poses a threat to the continent.

Also, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, a man heavily criticised for his strong hold on his country has emerged the new Chairperson of the AU.
