The Confederation of African Football has donated $200,000 to the African Union, in order to alleviate the crisis plaguing the Horn of Africa, according to a press release issued by the African institution that brings together 54 member states.

The event was held in Libreville (Gabon) on February 11, the outgoing President of the AU Commission, Jean Ping, justified the delivery of the check “to alleviate the plight of victims of the recent drought and famine in the Horn of Africa“.

The donation of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is in response to the appeal made by the AU at the conference that was organized in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) on August 25, 2011, in order to mobilize resources for the victims of drought and famine in the Horn of Africa, particularly in Somalia.

With words of thanks, Ping referred to this gift as a gesture of “generosity” before the President, the Secretary General and the Director of Communication at the CAF: Issa Hayatou, Hicham El Amrani and Habuba Suleiman, respectively. Ping also said that “when Africans are in need, our continent and its people should be the first to step in and help.”
