Goal: Pitso Mosimane has named a squad of 30 players for Bafana Bafana’s three friendlies in January 2012. The three matches will be against Equatorial Guinea (5 January), Zambia (11 January) and Ghana (15 January) who are all preparing for their participation in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The squad sees the inclusion of six first-timers, most notably May Mahlangu – who had a dream 2011 at Helsingborgs in Sweden – and Bidvest Wits striker Ryan Chapman.
Fellow first time call-ups are Wits left-back Patrick Phungwayo, Mamelodi Sundowns starlet Themba Zwane and Free State Stars duo Rudiger Gilbert and Mzikayise Mashaba.
There are also recalls to Bafana reckoning for Ajax Cape Town vice-captain Nazeer Allie and Daine Klate whose form for Orlando Pirates recently has seen a clamour for him to be included.
Itumeleng Khune, on the other hand, has been left out because of his groin injury.
Apart from Mahlangu, who is between seasons with Helsingborgs, Mosimane will have to do without his Belgian-based players and Bradley Grobler for the Ghana match because their first club fixtures of the new year falls on the same weekend.
Mosimane’s explained his selection saying, “I have invited some players so I can have a closer look at them. I also want to reward those who did well this year. For us this is the start of preparations for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament which we will host. This is a training camp for us where we will be trying various combinations.
“Unfortunately we won’t have some of the overseas-based players but again it’s a blessing in disguise in that we will be able to see more players. I am positive the three upcoming matches will help in that regard.
