Finidi assures Nigeria on Afcon 2012
Former Nigerian international right winger, Finidi George has allayed fear of Nigeria’s qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
The two-time African champions trailed three points behind fellow West African group leaders, Guinea with 10 points with two games to wrap up the qualifiers.
Group leader qualifies automatically for the biennial football showpiece to be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
Finidi who was among the galaxy of stars that graced former Super Eagles’ captain pull out game on Saturday at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Lagos told SuperSport.com that Nigeria have been on similar the tight path but have gone ahead to qualify at the end of the day. He opined that Nigeria will qualify for the continental football fiesta.
“We have been in situation like this before, do you remember the 2002 World Cup, we were in a very tight situation like this but at the end of the day we qualified for the World Cup. We need to believe in our team; hopefully they will make us proud.”
The former Real Betis star who said we need not put unnecessary pressure on the coach Samson Siasia’s Super Eagles, hinted that the current up and down in fortune is expected of a team still undergoing restructuring.
“We are in a littl e bit of hurry, Siasia is new, the players are new, it will take about two, three years to fully build the team. “Why are we always in a hurry, we need time to build a team, that is what we need to do now, putting pressure on them at this infancy stage will make them derail.
“We should not do it; we should be patient with them. One is not saying that they should not raise their game against their opponents or win convincingly, what I am saying is that we should take it easy with them especially when they are not living up to our expectations,” the former Sharks told SuperSport.com.
