African champions Nigeria were rudely brought down to earth by world champions Germany in a friendly international on Thursday.
The Super Falcons, still on a high after reclaiming their African title from Equatorial Guinea this month, were handed an 8-0 pasting by the world champions.
Nigeria coach Uche Eucharia recalled two-time African Player of the Year Cynthia Uwak to the squad, but opted to start with a first eleven from the African Women Championship team.
It did not seem to matter, as they were down by an Inka Grings goal within the opening five minutes.
Things went rapidly downhill from there, and matters were not helped by the atrocious freezing conditions and slippery pitch.
Kerstin Garefrekes took advantage to make it 2-0 on 9 minutes and Grings was on hand to make it three within a minute.
Former World Player of the Year Birgit Prinz joined the party with two goals. The first came after 18 minutes, and the second followed three minutes before the break.
The hosts were cruising comfortably as they finished the first half with a 5-0 advantage.
Three more goals followed in the second period. Youngster Alexandra Popp popped up with a sixth goal soon after the restart, and Garfrekes rounded up the scoring with two second half efforts to complete her hattrick.
The result left the African champions with questions to answer ahead of next year’s World Cup, although coach Eucharia Uche blamed it on the cold weather and fatigue.
